Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised within Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of social issues and taught how to express herself through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and brought up. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was would later inspire her to write a script for a movie on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing content for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right after college, as an intern at a small studio. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
